REFINE: Decision-support tools

ECO-CATCH will deliver two Decision-Support Tools (DSTs) that work in (near) real-time to help fisheries optimize target catch, while minimizing bycatch and impacts on sensitive habitats. These tools will help with forecasting for a high return at a low impact and will be based on harmonized formats which are scalable for widespread uptake. Alongside this, ECO-CATCH will drive new Data Sharing Agreements with fishers for aggregated bycatch data.

How will ECO-CATCH deliver ‘Decision-support tools’?

Stakeholder-driven mapping of data needs and data integration

EFICE, ILVO, DTU

ECO-CATCH will identify the data needs of core stakeholders via focus groups held with each case study fishery. These will bring together fishers and fisheries organisations to align on priorities, and conservation and sustainability objectives. Species and mapping data collected under ECO-CATCH’s ‘SMART Bycatch Detection Systems’ and ‘Mapping Sensitive Habitats and Species’ Work Packages will support the development of real-time onboard decision-support tools. ECO-CATCH will ensure all data streams are mapped and integrated, and that they meet both existing data standards and the needs of stakeholders.

Bycatch and catch forecast models

This solution will focus on developing a forecast model for catch and bycatch, which utilises catch and environmental data. It will help to predict the catches of target fish such as plaice and sole, and sensitive ETP species such as small-eyed-, sandy-, and undulate ray. ECO-CATCH will also develop a fishing suitability index for target species, by using catch forecasts, habitat sensitivity and real-time AI systems for bycatch risk (inclusive of the bycatch of juvenile target fish).

 

User-friendly interface

DTU, ILVO, EFICE

Helping skippers in real-time, ECO-CATCH’s outputs will be designed to be user friendly and tailored to wheelhouse dashboard interfaces. Decision-support tools (DSTs) will be fisheries specific and designed to operate in any digital environment, ensuring maximum scalability across sectors and platforms. The DSTs will be integrated with ECO-CATCH’s juvenile fish detector and conveyor belt detector.
